“Volcan, you need to see this,” Ero called out. As soon as Volcan reached Ero and Blizard, he let out a choked roar. It was Freitta lying on the ground, motionless. Her body was mutilated in the worst possible way. Her body had been dumped and something else. Volcan sniffed at whatever it was and roared again. That something was his unborn children. The other dragons remained silent, letting Volcan grieve. Ero sent the other inside.
“You know where to find us if you need anything, Volcan,” Ero said. Volcan could hear the sorrow in Ero’s voice. It gave him little comfort. Volcan stayed with Freitta’s body for what seemed like an eternity. He finally came back in. The others stood up, trying not to rush him. They knew he would want to kill the ones behind her death. Sometimes, patience is the key to do such a thing.
“Help me bury her body and the destroyed eggs,” Volcan said, turning back to go outside again. They would have to be discreet about the burial. With the spies lurking around, it would be hard to tell who was on which side. The precession took what felt like hours. A few times, they had to stop. There were patrols on the roads. Very few of those patrols were trustworthy. Freitta’s body had been covered by a crate to avoid suspicion.
Eventually, they made it to the burial site. Each one said their piece, Volcan being the last. They then lowered her body and the destroyed eggs into the ground. Ero placed a hand on Volcan’s shoulder. Nothing was said between the two, but nothing left unknown. Volcan knew his friends would be there for him.
“I want those behind her death to pay,” he told them rather bluntly. Blizard gave Volcan a look as if he understood. He was thinking, “What if it had been Ivy that died such a way?” Ivy rubbed her head against Blizard affectionately. She then went to Volcan and gave him a hug. It was all she could do to give him some comfort.
“We’ll make sure they pay for what they did. We all loved dearly,” Emrel said, wanting to be there to see the culprit’s demise. The others couldn’t blame them. They felt the same way.
“Whatever happens, we’re in this together,” Ero said and the others nodded. They didn’t leave for the longest time. The two suns had set, the stars coming out, one by one. Then they left after burning the crate. It was midnight when they got home. The four moons were out, having lighted their way. Knowing they needed sleep, they slept the best they could.
Noon, the next day, the whole country heard of Freitta’s death. Some blamed Volcan while others blamed the invading army. None of them was happy to have Freitta leave them so soon and in such a horrifying way. The king, Boriegard, requested to meet with the eight dragons. He only requested council with anyone if there was a reason. They accepted almost reluctantly. They were certain he was one of those whom blamed Volcan. Then again, he had always been a man of reason.
When the council began, the king looked at each of the dragons, six dwarves, six elves, and twelve humans that stood before him. “I called all of you hear today to ask you something. It seems our hand is being forced. I regret to tell you that we are the only country left standing, and are being invaded as we speak. I am sending all thirty-two of you on a mission. It may take years to accomplish. Stop them from causing any more damage to other planets. This one is already doomed because of our ignorance and reluctance to go further than stopping them at our borders,” the king said. They remained quiet. The queen sat by her husband. She looked rather worried.
“I have a favor to ask of you. Take our children with you and keep them safe. I fear for their safety,” she said. Volcan was the only one to remain quiet. There were whispers among the others. Things must be worse than originally thought. Whoever had taken over the planet must know what they were doing. Ero didn’t look happy about that at all. He suspected as much. His attention turned to Volcan, uncertain how the red dragon was taking the information. Ero took a step forward.
“I’ll do it,” Ero said, having only an idea of what was in store. Volcan looked at him in shock before standing by his friend. The other six did the same. The humans looked at them in awe. The dwarves hesitated as the elves, without a doubt, joined the dragons. Then finally, the dwarves and humans joined the others.
The king nodded, knowing he chose the right group of people. He stood up then. “I, on behalf of our nation, thank you. We will never forget your sacrifice, courage warriors. The good people of Remrance will come to you in times of need.” He bowed to them. They returned the bow. Ero wasn’t too sure about the ‘courageous warriors’ part. Either way, someone had to stop this invading force. He was afraid the planet would be a place they would never come back to. That saddened him greatly. They would have to find a new home on another planet. Ivy rubbed her head against Blizard, uncertain what the future would bring.
Before long, people were being put into cages; humans, dragons, elves, and dwarves alike. Emrel’s children had died, trying to protect her. Golden Ray’s brother died in a fight. Moonlight almost lost her life from a brutal attack. Ero and Drake’s clan died, as did Volcan’s, Blizard, and Ivy’s clans. They were eventually captured and taken to the ships. The interior or the ship was dreary, dark, and the only people walking the hallways were those of the ‘cult’ as Ero had put it so blatantly.
The capture of the planet’s inhabitants took approximately a year, give or take. Those who refused or fought back were slain where they were. Those the king had asked to do the mission waited for their time to escape. Ero, Drake, and Emrel were the first to escape with several of the elves, humans, and dwarves. The others had found their own ways of escaping. In part, they didn’t like being held prisoner against their wills. They had been separated from each other, which made it harder for them to plan a joint escape.
Ero had found a place to stay on a nearby planet, but he couldn’t stay long. They were looking for him and the others. Several hundred years passed and Ero met up with many people, most weren’t human. He had learned many a thing. As did his friends as they searched for each other. Volcan still held vengeance in his heart as it nearly consumed him. The only thing keeping Volcan from doing anything reckless was those traveling with him.
Ero had found Drake, then eventually Golden Ray in a matter of 3,000 years. Ero was a bit concerned about Volcan, wondering what happened to him. The elves, dwarves, and humans had left behind offspring to help finish the mission. Emrel and Moonlight were the next two to be found. Many of the dragons had most of the elves, dwarves, and humans with them. That seemed to be a bit reassuring. Blizard and Ivy were next while Volcan brought up the rear. Some of what the red dragon told them made Ero frown, not happy about what he heard.
For the next few years, they went into hiding. They were hoping to find a place where they were able to come out without looking over their shoulders. That didn’t seem to be the case for a long time. Approximately eight hundred years ago, they arrived on Earth. They hid their identities from Earth’s inhabitants. Truth of the matter was, they didn’t know who to trust. The years came and went, the elves, dwarves, and humans found ways to keep their bloodlines going. Fears were still evident in them.
The thought of another planet destroyed wasn’t very pleasing. They managed to find a home and continue blending in as if they too were humans; or most of them, anyway. So far, they hadn’t seen a sign of the group. Planning quickly began: under digressions, of course. They were revising the plan multiple times. None of the revisions seemed right. It was as if they needed an outside perspective. None of them knew anyone who could help, trusting or not. Volcan seemed bored, restless. There had been a few times where he had said it aloud.
About 30 or 40 years ago, they started noticing strange activities. Those activities slowly became increasingly noticeable. The rest of those who knew of or were a part of the supernatural were noticing the same strange things. Those strange things were similar to those on Sovera, yet more subtle. That had them wondering why. If this group wanted to destroy Earth and its inhabitants, why be so subtle about it? Why not make themselves known? There were answers to those questions, even if they didn’t see it right away.
About twenty or so years ago, Ero came across twin half-breeds with a clan. They started talking. Soon after, the clan met Drake.
“Are there more of you?” asked the only female of the group. Her name was Elizabeth. She had been one of the first to ask questions.
“About six more, along with some elves, dwarves, and humans,” Ero said then. “We need to keep our presence a secret.” Those last words said by the dragon caused Elizabeth to frown, wondering what he meant. “It is so those who search for us do not know we are here yet.” As he said those words, murmurs ran through the group.
“Who is it that is looking for you?” This time, Axsel spoke up. It was on their minds. If this dragon was being truthful, then they may need all the help they can get. Ero didn’t answer for a few moments as he considered his words carefully. Then finally, he spoke after sighing.
“It is a group of individuals who plan on making the universe into something more sinister than it already is. The name of the group is (insert name here).”
The dragon’s words caused the newer group to become even wearier than they already were. The news didn’t sound all that pleasant, from start to finish. Ero had explained the entire situation to them in full detail, beginning to end. Some had murmured a few words as they listened, but otherwise, they all had remained silent throughout the whole thing. This (abb. For group name) had way more than this band of fighters had. The odds seemed stacked against them. Then again, things weren’t always what they seemed at first glance.
“I’d like to you show you something,” the dragon said after a few moments of silence. Elizabeth and Axsel looked at each other for a moment or two before looking at Ero once more.
“Then what and where is it?” she asked, revealing their curiosity about the something the dragon wanted to show them. Ero almost smiled, not in a sinister way, but a more pleasant way. He did show them, telling them what that something was. That something was the location where the others were at. The clan was silent upon seeing the band of revolutionists.
(Final Battle [Skipping ahead])
People were in place as they waited. It had only been thirty minutes, but it felt like an eternity. All that had happened had led up to this moment. Those who had died will finally rest in peace once their murderers got their ‘just desserts’ after so many years. The dragons were restless, anxiously waiting for the enemy to come. They had been waiting centuries for everything to come to this very moment. Now that it come, they were nervous, somewhat afraid for those fighting with them.
The enemy had finally revealed themselves to the general public some time ago. As expected, panic occurred. The governments seemed a little too confident in beating the foreign invaders. So foolish, they were! One fight was all it took to cause them to realize that foolishness. Entire sections of the militaries had been wiped out. There wasn’t much anyone could do about that now. Right now, all the band could focus on was the upcoming fight. This would be it; what they had been waiting for since this all started. They were so close.
All they could do was hope things would go their way and that their training paid off. As soon as the enemy was half a mile away, the dragons tensed up even more. This would be a blood bath if they didn’t stay on high alert. Anything could happen. Question was; what were they thinking? Axsel and the dragons knew the answer to that question. It was only a matter of time before they would all know. Elizabeth looked at her twin brother with a frown. If only she knew what he was thinking concerning what he had heard.
He didn’t look at her, not certain if he wanted to tell her the grave news. He knew how she would react and it wouldn’t be good. Then again, she would find out eventually along with the others. She would have burned a hole in him if they didn’t hear something letting out a roar. The sound made some of them jump. When that something came, shocked looks had been shown on their faces for a second or two. Recovery was quick, though they were trying to figure out what the serpent like creature was.
“They created it from years of experimentation,” Ero said as soon as he regained his voice. The creature roared again as some of the people went further into the building. They couldn’t do anything. “Let Blizard and I deal with the creature,” Ero said then to Volcan. He knew what the red dragon was thinking. Volcan snorted, but let Ero have his way. He knew he might do something he would regret later if he wasn’t careful in what he would do or say. Ero would be the best to handle the situation with the serpent like creature.
A horn blew, signaling that the enemy was about to attack.
“Get ready!” Elizabeth shouted. Everyone scurried to their posts, picking up their weapons. The enemy moved towards them quickly. Ero and Blizard were the first to take flight as the creature rose, taking flight itself. The two dragons didn’t know if either of them would make it out alive or not. All they could do was fight to the best of their abilities. Moments later, weapons clashed; singing only blades and arrows know how. Volcan could be heard roaring before his fiery breath took hold of the opposing army.
The battlefield soon filled with lifeless bodies from both sides. The battle continued as both sides removed their dead. As for the battle with the serpent like creature, Ero and Blizard were having moderate difficulty with it. That hadn’t stopped the two from working together. They were finding out things from it that they didn’t know about. Then again, it might help them stop this before more bloodshed could occur. What they found out, that will be known soon enough. The dragons were trying to get the creature to see beyond its narrowed focus.
Elizabeth and Axsel were among the first to know, though they kept silent about it. They were letting Ero and Blizard do their thing without interference before they decide to speak up. The battle soon ended before most could finish their attacks. Something else had happened. Everyone on the ground looked up into the sky. Instead of seeing that usual blue hue, the sky seemed to be of a rainbow of colors. How odd! A moment or two later, the colors subsided. They had seen the creature fall to the ground in those same moments.
No one moved, except maybe an inch. Ero and Blizard landed, eyes on the creature. For what seemed to be a long time, it didn’t move. Then suddenly, it stirred. Letting out another roar, it began attacking its creators. Elizabeth and her brothers moved the injured and dead from their side, attempting to stay out of the creature’s way. By the way it was reacting, it knew something that some of them didn’t know. What none of them knew was that it would die before it would be able to live a life the way it would have wanted. The injured were treated as quickly as possible.
Some were uncertain if the battle was over or not. If it was, was it worth celebrating? Was the war over? Was it just the beginning? Only time could answer those questions. As for now, they would focus on rebuilding if need be. “Ero?” Elizabeth’s voice had come from behind the dragon. He was slow in looking in her direction, waiting for her to speak if that was what she was planning on doing. “How are the others doing?” Not the question he would have wanted her to ask, but this one was close enough.
“All right, given the extent of their injuries.”
There was silence for what seemed like forever.
“Do you think it’s over?”
“I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see.”
“For Volcan’s sake, I hope it is.”
“I hope so too, and I hope he finds a way passed his hurt and anger.”
“He will. He does have a lot of people on his side.”
“That he does.”
